Lewis Trail map, my QUB library card, and some internet research, I tracked down the top Lewis spots in Belfast during the annual C.S. Lewis Festival that November. From his birthplace, to his childhood home, to the numerous Lewis memorials around the city. To help you on your own literary explorations in Belfast, Ive compiled this detailed guide and a  Google map itinerary of the top spots on and off the official C.S. Lewis Trail in Belfast. Hop on bus lines 3 or 4 from the city centre and tell the driver you’d like to stop at the Holywood Arches Library. The Searcher Statue at Holywood Arches Library The first stop on the C.S. Lewis Trail in Belfast is this statue of Lewis, unveiled on his 100th birthday in 1998. This work by Northern Irish artist Ross Wilson depicts Lewis as his character Professor Digory Kirke entering the wardrobe portal to Narnia. The back of the wardrobe features a lion’s head and a letter Lewis wrote to 10-year-old Anne Jenkins in 1961. In it, he explains how the Narnia series can be read as an allegory for Christianity. Fun fact: Jenkins attended the statue’s 1998 unveiling. Holywood Arches Library Archives When I visited during the 2014 C.S. Lewis Festival, the librarians presented me with a map of the C.S. Lewis Trail and a bookmark featuring “The Searcher.” They also let my friends and me peruse their archives of newspaper clippings about Lewis. One was a story about Conor Anderson, whose family was living in Lewis childhood home. At age 11, Conor was selected to read part of  The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe  in the BBC Radio Ulster serial. C.S. LEWIS SQUARE The square opened on November 22, 2016, making it the newest spot on the C.S. Lewis Trail in Belfast. It’s a community space dedicated to Lewis and featuring sculptures of his characters by Irish artist Maurice Harron. I was lucky enough to visit Belfast again last winter just  after this opened; I followed the path from “The Searcher” and met Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, Mr. Tumnus, and Aslan himself, along with a few of the series’ villains. The artist used different sculptural styles for different characters, but I noticed that he used the same style for Aslan and Maugrim, chief of the White Witch’s secret police. Lewis Birthplace: 47 Dundela Avenue While the original building no longer stands, a blue plaque marks the spot of Lewis’ birth. Belmont Tower Exhibition The historic Belmont Tower  is located in the heart of the neighborhood Lewis grew up in. It houses a Lewis exhibition displaying first editions of the Narnia books, some of his letters, and copies of his academic work from The Inklings, the literary group he co-founded with J.R.R. Tolkien while at Oxford. The front gate is marked “Little Lea,” though, and if you peek over the fence you can see the commemorative blue plaque stating: “C.S. Lewis â€" author and critic â€" lived here 1905-1917.” St. Marks Church C.S. Lewis was baptized in St. Mark’s Church, known locally as “The Lion on the Hill.” Lewis’ grandfather worked as a rector here. Anytime Lewis visited him, he would have stared right into the lion-shaped door handle leading to the rectors office. Linen Hall Library The C.S. Lewis Association of Ireland donated a set of works by and about Lewis to the library in 2004. Lewis was a childhood friend of Arthur Greeves, who went on to become president of the Linen Hall Library. The library occasionally hosts an exhibit on this friendship and more called “C.S. Lewis: Through the Wardrobe.” It’s open this year as part of the C.S. Lewis Festival until November 30. Take any 8 bus down to Queen’s University Belfast and visit the McClay Library. The library is for students only, but tell the clerks you want to visit the C.S. Lewis Reading Room, and they’ll let direct you to the first floor. A giant lion rug carpets the floor outside the wardrobe door entrance. You can also people watch as students hustle about between the library, the students’ union, and the Hogwarts-like Lanyon Building. And since you’re already in the Queen’s Quarter, pop around the corner to Maggie Mays for a pint-sized milkshake or an Ulster Fry. (I still get cravings.) Out-of-Belfast Bonus: Mourne Mountains In his essay “On Stories,” Lewis writes, “I have seen landscapes, notably in the Mourne Mountains and southwards which under a particular light made me feel that at any moment a giant might raise his head over the next ridge.” To experience this same sense of the fantastical, head south to the Mourne Mountains. I can attest to the magic of the experiencethe day I hiked up Slieve Donard with friends, I saw a half-buried formation of rocks that I believed, for all of five seconds, to be the remains of a giant. Perhaps the particular light Lewis spoke of was the same dim, gray mist that hung over the mountain the day I visited, soft and gentle in its foreboding ambiance. C.S. Lewis Legacy in Belfast The librarians at the Holywood Arches Library told me they didn’t think people in Belfast gave enough consideration to C.S. Lewis. He is often disassociated with his homeland, far more likely to be associated with England. He himself did have mixed feelings about his native land. A Lewis quote I found in the Holywood Arches archive says: “I am crossing over to Ireland: my birthplace and dearest refuge although most dreadful because of the strife, hatred and often civil war between dissenting faiths.” Lewis lived through Ireland’s split in 1921, and the conflict both before and after. Biographer A.N. Wilson speculates that Lewis’ ecumenical approach to Christianity may have arisen from his disdain for the sectarian conflict of his homeland. Lewis died in 1963, however, before “The Troubles,” when the sectarian conflict became worse than it had ever been. African Americans, among their families, and their communities find themselves in an unceasing battle for survival in a world that has previously, and to this day, brought many hardships and sufferings. Although America has succeeded in abolishing slavery, there are still aspects of racism and economic segregation that occur within residential areas. This being said, many individuals of the African American race become primary targets and victims to devastating economic and social disadvantages. Question: Discuss about the Tenancy Lawfor Residential Tenancies Act. Answer: Introduction Tenancy laws have been enacted in order to address the legal disputes which arise out of a tenancy agreement along with setting guidelines for landlords and tenants which they must consider before getting into an agreement. In Canada the legislation which governs tenancy agreements is the Residential Tenancies Act 2006. This paper identifies the risk involved while entering into a tenancy agreement along with the legal obligations and rights the parties to the agreement have towards each other. The paper defines the legal principles related to the scenario and then applies it to the fact to determine an appropriate conclusion. Legal Principles It is the responsibility of the landlord to ensure that they provide a favorable environment to the tenant to reside. The tenant must ensure that the property is not damaged to an extent which causes substantial problems to the tenants. The landlord are required to repair any such damage even if the tenant had knowledge about it at the time of getting into the agreement According to Section 20 (1) of the Residential Tenancies Act 2006. The landlords have the right to claim a security deposit from the employees however the amount of such deposit cannot legally exceed the rent of one month according to Section 106 (2) of the Residential Tenancies Act 2006. While getting into a tenancy agreement the landlord and tenant must both ensure that they have inspected the premises and prepared an inspection report. It is the duty of all tenants to ensure that they have gone through the tenant check list as provided in page 20 of the tenancy agreement. The inspection report is necessary for a party to prove that the damage to the property have not been caused by them. The inspection repot must include in writing the damages which exist in a property (LAW, 2015). Discussion and Conclusion In the provided scenario sally is the tenant who have entered into a tenancy agreement. Sally had the responsibility of inspecting the property and constituting an inspection report in writing so that she can use it in case of future tenancy disputes. In addition sally had the responsibility of reading the tenant checklist with respect to the tenancy before getting into the agreement. The tenanted apartment was discovered to be defective as the existing damages did not allow the property to heat up to a comfortable level even when the heater was working properly. The tenant in this case denied repairing the property which was his responsibility. In case sally had prepared an inspection report she could have forced the land lord to do repairs as it was not her fault. However the landlord is liable to make the repairs as he is obligated to do so under section 20(1) of the Act. The security deposit charged by the tenant is $2000 which is illegal according to section 106(1) of the act. The landlord was only entitled to a fee of $1000 as it was the amount accounting to one months rent. It can thus be concluded that the landlord have the duty to repair the apartment to make it comfortable and is liable to return the security deposit charged in excess of the legal amount. 10 Tips for Learning a Foreign Language as an Adult While the U.S. is home to over 350 different languages, according to a report by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS), most Americans are monolingual. And this limitation can negatively impact individuals, U.S. companies, and even the country as a whole.   For example, the AAAS notes that learning a second language improves cognitive ability, assists in learning other subjects, and delays some of the effects of aging. Other findings include that up to 30% of U.S. companies have stated that they’ve missed business opportunities in foreign countries because they didn’t have in-house staff who spoke the dominant languages of those countries, and 40% stated they could not reach their international potential because of language barriers.  However, one of the most striking and alarming examples of the importance of learning a foreign language happened at the onset of the 2004 avian flu epidemic. According to the AAAS, scientists in the U.S. and other English-speaking countries did not originally understand the magnitude of avian flu because they could not read the original research – which was written by Chinese researchers. In fact, the report notes that just 200,000 U.S. students are studying Chinese compared to 300 to 400 million Chinese students who are studying English. And 66% of Europeans know at least one other language compared to just 20% of Americans. Many European countries have national requirements that students must learn at least one foreign language by the age of 9, according to data from the Pew Research Center. In the U.S., school districts are typically allowed to set their own policies. As a result, the vast majority (89%) of American adults who know a foreign language say they learned it in their childhood home. Learning Styles for Children Children and adults learn foreign languages differently. Rosemary G. Feal, executive director of the Modern Language Association, says, â€Å"Children generally learn languages through games, songs, and repetition, and in an immersive environment, they often produce speech spontaneously.† And there’s a reason for that spontaneity. Research is an inquiry to describe, explain, predict and control the observed development. Research helps to acquire knowledge about a particular thing it is done to understand. Narrative Essay It was a hot summer day in the year 2002 when I went camping with my family in Savannah, Georgia. I will never forget this day because it’s the day I learned the lesson that if I don’t obey my parents the consequences will be large. I was only about six years old when we first pulled into the campground. Of course being a young child the first thing I noticed was this extravagant playground out near the road. When me and my sister, Natalie who was around seven at this time, saw it we both looked at each other and knew we were going to go play on that playground. We pulled into our campsite that was located near the very back of the park and our parents started unpacking everything and setting up the motorhome. They were making it obvious they wanted us out of their way. They grabbed our dolls, bikes and chalk out of the car and told us to go play. Natalie and I knew this was the perfect time to go play on the playground that we saw on our way in. It just so happened there was a playground right by our campsite as well. We came up with the perfect plan. We would tell our parents we were going to go play on the playground and trick into them into thinking we meant the one right near our campsite. In reality we planned on going to the big one near the front of the campground and not have to lie in the process. So we grabbed our bikes and asked our parents if we could ride over to the playground and play. They both said yes, so we rode off towards what we thought was the most beautiful playground we’ve ever saw. It was probably about a fifteen minute bike ride for us to get there. We dropped our bikes and ran to the playground and started playing. About a half hour passed when my sister Natalie decided she had to use the restroom. So she went around to the other side of the playground away from the road and decided to go. By this point we noticed there was this blue truck that drove past a few times while we were there. We began to get a little scared and thought maybe we should start going back to the camper. No sooner than we got back on our bikes our mom and dad came driving up with anger in their eyes. Me and Natalie knew we were about to be in some big trouble. Just as my parents got out of the car the man in the blue truck stopped and walked over. He started reprimanding my parents and told them they can’t let their kids run around without any supervision. He also said he was the manager and told my parents Natalie sed the restroom right out in the open. My parents apologized to the man and then made us apologize as well. The manager accepted our apology and told us we weren’t allowed back on that particular playground for the rest of our stay. By this point my our parents were livid and gave me and Natalie a 10 minute lecture about the dangers of them not knowing where we were and not being able to see us. They grabbed us and our bikes and we headed back to the campsite. When we got back they took all our toys and our bikes and we were told we weren’t allowed to join any of the activities the rest of the week. That week my family went swimming, horse back riding and hiking. Natalie and I didn’t get to do any of it and our siblings made sure they told us after every activity how fun it was. It was a time I’ll never forgot. It seems everything seems so much more traumatic when you are young. I learned the lesson that I should obey my parents even if I don’t necessarily want to. I’m not saying there aren’t times I don’t go against their will; but ever since that day I think to myself and analyze if the rule that I am about to break is worth the consequences I’ll have to pay if I get caught.
